An active spring is coming

Everyone needs to begin finalizing their plans for a visit to Helena during the spring! Not only will everything be beautiful due to spring bursting forth with its annual reawakening, but there will also be a lot going on. We have the house reserved for the families of two different couples that will be getting married ( April 6: Julia Nordsieck will wed Nick Malinowski and, May 4 Anna Skorupa will wed Doug Friedlander). We are excited to meet their families and to participate in their festivities. Helena will also be have the Wild Hog Festival the last weekend in April, the Warfield Festival the first week in May, the reenactment of the Battle of Helena on May 25 and 26 plus other fun events. Helena Holiday Festival Events

The Helena Holiday Festival of events will begin on December 1 with the lighting of the tree and Courtsquare Park at 6:30 pm. Join us in the park in front of the Phillips County Courthouse to sing some carols, light the tree and enjoy hot chocolate and birthday cake. Birthday cake????? We will be celebrating the 100th birthday of Sonny Boy Williams, the famous Blues musician!

On December 6, the Warfield Concert Series presents "Tis the Season" at 7:30 at the Lily Peters Auditorium on the Phillips Community College of the U of A campus. This event is free to everyone.

The Helena Christmas Parade will be held at 6:00 pm on Friday, December 8 beginning at West Helena Baptist Church on Plaza and ending at H and M Hardware on Sebastian.

The Humane Society of the Delta will host a Miss Humane Society of the Delta Beauty Pageant on Saturday, December 1 at 3:30 in the Malco Theater on Cherry Street. Then, on Saturday, December 8 at 7:00, following the parade, a fundraiser, Deck the Paws, will be held at Biscuit Row. Entry fee is $15.00. Blues music will be the entertainment and beer, wine, and mufalettos will be sold.

Helena on Ice will return to Helena on December 12, 13, and 14 for school children to enjoy during the school day. Friday, December 14, 5:00 - 8:00 the rink will open to the public. Children will skate free!!!!! At 5:00 we will unwrap the newest bronze sculpture in the park, a young African American Southland School student. The program will then have school choir groups performing, a Readers Theater from Central High School, and other groups bringing Christmas Cheer to everyone in attendance. Community skating will continue on Saturday, December 15, 10:00 - 6:00.

All of the activities are being sponsored by the Helena Advertising and Promotions Commission as a Christmas gift to our community.

Busy times ahead

In September we have a BMW Club travelling from Houston through Helena stopping in for a restful evening. Then, a high school reunion group will follow them. A wedding group will fill the house during September as well. King Biscuit Blues Festival brings some of our favorite guests. There will be old friends from high school, international guests, an Elvis impersonator from Tupelo, MS, a recording producer, and others that bring interesting stories and lots of fun with them! Exciting times are heading our way!

Progress on the Porch

We have the three brick columns rebuilt and they look wonderful! The whole side porch has been replaced and Mr. Norwood has completed half of the front porch. Dana and I will begin painting the side porch this weekend so pictures will be posted as soon as that happens. The addition of our sitting room at the front of the house has been wonderful! It is a comfortable place for guests to sit and visit, read a book, or watch television. It has been popular during these very hot delta summer days!

Join Us for the Kiwanis Club Murder Mystery

We are offering a package for Friday, February 24, 2012 for guests wishing to participate in the Murder Mystery night. Ice Skating in Helena

The Helena Advertising and Promotions Commission brought iceskating back to Helena for a second year! It was so much fun watching families enjoy time together and school children experience skating for the first time. Santa dropped by for the opening skating session and shared his jolly personality and some candy canes with the children. One of Helena's newest citizens, Kennedy Frer met Santa and seemed to think he was an alright kind of guy.

Open House with the Delta Jewels

Dana and I held an open house at the end of November so that we could show off this beautiful home all decorated for Christmas and to give a group of local girls called the Delta Jewels to show off their talents and sell some of the marvelous jewelry they have made. The Delta Jewels displayed their jewelry and assisted with serving refreshments for the guests. It was a very successful day for both the Delta Jewels and the Edwardian Inn. Thanks to everyone who dropped by to visit with us!

Busy, Busy Fall Season

We have been very busy since the beginning of October ---- Blues Festival weekend, Katherine Fuller and Brad Thompson Wedding weekend, Teach for America Coffee House, and this weekend we had Razorback Football fans travelling to and from Oxford, MS going to the game. Next week is Tour da Delta and a high school reunion of Miller High School classmates. All of these events have brought in such a diverse group of people! We never have time to get bored!!!! Yesterday, I tried to carry out my "Annual Fall Burn" by setting fire to a huge pile of leaves, grass clippings, and tree limbs collected through the summer. It was a really slow burn and even with the rain today we still have a little smoldering going on. The seed trucks are busily travelling to and from the grain elevators that sit on the river so I know it is really fall. My father was in the cottonseed and soybean business so I spent a great portion of my young life watching trucks unload at the Buckeye Cotton Oil Mill. I love fall almost as much as I love spring! The world of Helena is in transition and things are looking good!
